HOT ANTIC JAZZ BAND

HISTORICAL

(traduction de Murielle RIGOLET)

The HOT ANTIC JAZZ BAND was born in 1979. This is a the end of a very "hot" jam session that five amateur musicians discovered they had a common passion : the music of the legendary trumpet player Jabbo Smith. They then decided to meet regularly in order to play his repertoire.

The funding members :

- Michel BASTIDE (ophtalmologist) cornet and valve trombon

- Jean-François BONNEL (student, future music teacher) reeds and cornet

- Gilles BERRUT ( medical student) piano

- Jean-Pierre DUBOIS (engineer) banjo and reeds

- Christian LEFEVRE (architect) tuba and valve trombon

The name " HOT ANTIC JAZZ BAND " is a creation of Christian LEFEVRE. After rehearsing for 6 months, they started playing in pubs and jazz clubs… and the story began.

Their first big opportunity was the 16th Jazz Band Ball in Paris and then, a tour in England in April 1981…

In 1982, Virginie SURAN (a student who became Mrs Jean-François BONNEL later) progressively joined the HOT ANTIC at reeds.

In 1983, Stéphane MATTHEY (lawyer) replaced Gilles BERRUT at the piano.

In 1989, Bernard ANTHERIEU ( agricultural engineer) at reeds and banjo, and Philippe RASPAIL (school teacher) replaced Jean-François and Virginie BONNEL. At present, Jean-François BONNEL is one of the best European jazzmen.

In 1997, Martin SECK (German computer scientist) replaced Stéphane MATTHEY.

The aim of the HOT ANTIC JAZZ BAND is first of all to play for pleasure. Each opportunity to play (rehearsal, concert…) is a celebration. These six super friends share exactly the same musical tastes and wish to share them out.

The career of the HOT ANTICs led them to Europe, the USA, Canada, India, Japan and Africa.

They played with some legendary jazz musicians : Jabbo SMITH, Ikey ROBINSON, Benny WATERS, Doc CHEATHAM, Turk MURPHY, Topsy CHAPMAN, Bob BARNARD, Jim GALLOWAY, Humphrey LYTTLETON, Claude LUTER…

Among their hundreds of concerts, they remember some very special opportunities :

The series of European concerts with their idol Jabbo SMITH in 1982. This extraordinary tour, initiated by the organiser Jean-Pierre DAUBRESSE, was immortalized by a CD : " Jabbo Smith & the Hot Antic Jazz Band" MECD04.

The "Tribute to Turk Murphy" concert in the Carnegie Hall in New York in 1987.

In 1985, a very touching concert in Chicago for the Good Time Jazz Club with Jabbo SMITH and Ikey ROBINSON. Both main musicians from the "Jabbo Smith Rhythm Aces orchestra" from 1929 played that evening with the Hot Antics. This was a tremendous dream coming true !

Recent tours in Japan, Canada and the USA.
